The pronoun ЭТОТ (ЭТО, ЭТА, ЭТИ) points at an object
which is close by or one that has been mentioned lately, one that is known to the speakers.
The pronoun ТОТ (ТО, ТА, ТЕ) is used to point out a distant object or the most distant one of two objects.
The demonstrative pronoun этот (эта, это, эти) changes for gender and number
and its English counterpart is the pronoun this or these.
Like the pronoun этот, the pronoun тот (та, то, те) changes for gender and number,
and its English counterpart is the pronoun that or those.

The demonstrative pronoun этот, эта, это, эти may fulfill various functions in the sentence.
When used attributively, the pronoun этот, эта, это, эти answers the question какой?, какая?, какое?, какие? (what?):
Какой дом? - Этот дом. What house? - This house. | Какое здание? - Это здание. What building? - This building. |
Какая улица? - Эта улица. What street? - This street. | Какие дома? - Эти дома. What houses? - These houses. |
In the questions Кто это? Что это? and answers to them only the pronoun ЭТО can be used.
As the subject, the pronoun ЭТО can point to any person or thing. It does not change according to gender or number.
